High Country Rail Trail

Having just ridden on my bike the entire length of the High Country Rail Trail from Shelley to Tallangatta (46 km except for that 1km at Boggy Creek Bridge where you need to ride on highway) -what a treat. Gates all the way and a slight detour to get across Dry Forest Creek. Some of the cutting were a bit wet but we rode on the top of them ….and then we got to Max’s seatWhat a gem. By taking the trail up the hill a bit the “boys’ have managed to cross the small creek with a metal platform bypassing an impossible expensive large trestle bridge/gully. Trickling water though mossy rocks and a seat to sit on while enjoying lunch a perfect place to take a break.The entire trail is not open yet but Dry Forest Creek trestle is the last bridge to be finished maybe 2018/19. Tallangatta Creek can now be bypassed via the road bridge.  Shelley to Derbyshire wanders though the forest mostly down hill and in  pretty good condition. From there its a rough unmade trail sharing with cows and horses but still fun to ride. The trail from Granya Road to Tallangatta is now mostly very easy to ride – bit rough in places until you get to Old Tallangatta.

Bed and Breakfast guests have taken advantage of the $50 fee to be dropped of at Shelley and that money has gone to adding improvements to the trail.

Autumn on the HCRT

With the water in Lake Hume still high, riding the HCRT is a real pleasure. Guests on the weekend at Redgum Bed and Breakfast borrowed my bikes and covered Ebden to Tallangatta on Saturday and Shelley to Derbyshire Sunday -the following photos are theirs.

The HCRT is now open to Tallangatta Creek. Work is progressing on Dry Forest Creek trestle bridge now the weather is cooling down.
